There he began his scientific studies, being the first to synthesize RNA in a laboratory, during which he shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1959 with the biochemist Arthur Kornberg, one of his most outstanding students.
Ochoa worked most of his life at New York University, a position he left in 1986, following the death of his wife, who plunged him into severe depression.
From that moment he ceased to publish studies, taught his knowledge through lectures and moved to Madrid. It was in this city that he died in 1993, leaving an extraordinary legacy that we can know in his biography, The Thrill of Discovering.
