Accept your emotions: the first step to be happy

Emotions are relatively brief psychophysiological states that we all inevitably feel. Your mission is to send us a clear message that something is happening inside or outside of us (but somehow related to us), which requires our attention. move us and push us to act in a concrete way. In fact, does the term emotion come from Latin?Emovere ?, which means “movement or pulse”.

Emotional states are caused by the release of certain neurotransmitters or hormones in our brain, which turn emotions into feelings. Unlike emotions, feelings are maintained longer and can be more easily verbalized.

  • We can classify emotions into: healthy positive emotions (happiness.
  • Well-being.
  • Peace?).
  • Meaningless positive emotions (euphoria.
  • Mania.
  • Hypomania?).
  • Healthy negative emotions (frustration.
  • Sadness.
  • Anger.
  • Regret?) And unhealthy negative emotions (depression.
  • Anxiety.
  • Guilt?).

It’s generally easy to accept certain emotional states, especially when they’re positive, but it’s very difficult to accept negative emotions, both healthy and unhealthy.

In the same direction, it seems that society has put in our minds the need to always be well, which is totally unreal and impossible to achieve. Emotional states come and go, depending on the context, our expectations and how we process information. Always being in the same emotional state of happiness is utopian.

We live in a culture of well-being and consumption, constantly bombard us with unrealistic messages that increase the pressure on us, these messages often tell us that the advertised product is the solution to many of our problems, and reinforce the idea that we should always smile, no matter what. Finally, they make an overly optimistic estimate of the control we have over our lives, so it’s always our fault.

The only thing that can make this irrational positivity is make us feel worse, there is such a demand that we are always in a good mood that this may be the main obstacle not to reach that state, we end up concealing our feelings, so we leave others see only those who are socially approved.

We send the message that “we shouldn’t feel this”, “Are we fragile if we experience anxiety or depression?” Yes? I’m not mature because things affect me too much.

With this attitude, we feel bad just because we are bad and have not found a coherent solution, this generates negative feelings that last longer, and even these healthy negative feelings become insane.

It is not only society that influences this way of managing emotions; Early childhood education is also a risk factor. Emotional intelligence is absent from educational plans. For example, how many of you have heard someone say “men don’t cry”?

If we learn to accept our emotional states effectively, whatever they are, paradoxically, we will feel that these negative emotions will often dissolve on their own, it’s not about feeding our emotions with negative thoughts, acting as a victim, or blaming ourselves. What we’re saying is that it’s no use criticizing or judging us if we suffer from anxiety, sadness or anger.

Here are some strategies you can implement today

When you hear this inner voice say “should,” force yourself to change it for a preference or a like. We can’t live trying to control how things should be, not even our emotional states. Only I can change my thoughts responsible for my disorder, if I accept at first that I feel bad at the time.

You are not a God, a superman or a perfect person, you are human and, as such, you will experience more or less pleasant emotional states, it is important to accept the idea that we cannot fight our own nature.

Invite emotion to live with you. It can be awkward, but it won’t kill you. It’s a handful of chemistry that runs through your bloodstream. Don’t give it too much importance, don’t dramatize him. He loves him; when you accept it, it’s part of your being.

Just as we talk to other people when we feel pain, whether we are cold or hot, we can also talk about our emotions when they are not positive, to tolerate an emotion we have to accept it, and accepting it means normalizing at all levels, even with others. Perhaps then another emotion will appear: shame. But remember, we should be ashamed to do something wrong, is it wrong to feel bad once in a while?

Remember that your emotions do not make you a weak person, they make you be and live like a human being, do not hide your emotions: live, learn from them and let them inspire you.
