I’m me, my cases and my decisions profile me

The title of this article refers to the famous quote of the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset: very briefly, he thought that the union of “I” and the circumstance is inseparable, that it is impossible to understand one without the other So, in general, the result of our decisions is linked to us or to our most stable part, but also to the peculiarities of time and place.

So when the philosopher said this: “I am me and my situation; if I don’t save her, won’t I be saved?” he spoke of the strength of this union, the one that exists between who we are and who we are. surrounds us, that is, our own habitat in which we find limitations and freedoms and in which we can decide between different options to continue.

  • The word circumstance implies a much broader framework than is often thought: family.
  • Society.
  • Culture.
  • A certain body with its physical and psychological characteristics.
  • Personality and character.
  • Etc.
  • Do I form by understanding your situation and giving you an explanation related to that of others.

This circumstance is flexible and adaptable in many ways: once we accept what surrounds us, we have the freedom to focus our decisions on a present that fills us and a future that will enrich us. What would have happened if I hadn’t done it the way I did?

In this way our experiences are shaped and our actions turn to the interests, desires and dreams that we have, at that point, circumstances and decisions define us and place us in front of the world and in relation to others.

Circumstances are not perfect and we don’t always have the enabling environment for everything to go as we would like: sometimes we have to decide with millions of adversity and sometimes it’s as if everything flows and the decision becomes clear. In both cases, we will finally decide and save the situation itself.

“The hardest part is the decision to act, the rest is nothing but tenacity. Fears are paper tigers. You can do whatever you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and procedure, the process is your own reward.

Amelia Earhart-

In this sense, we know that we have had good and bad times and that they are also necessary for us to feel stability: it is good to remember that joy and sadness travel on the same train, even when fear or sadness block us and prevent us from being forced to continue: even not deciding is to make a decision.

Any situation, step or moment we live in goes through making decisions and we are a product of it: having a coffee in the middle of the afternoon until the time we set the alarm clock to wake up, actions that seem insignificant and yet. they can mark us for the rest of the day.

The same thing happens with decisions that we think are important: it is not good to postpone the time to make them, but we must ask ourselves the right questions, give ourselves the necessary answers and be brave to face them: accepting responsibilities and knowing if listening are two important keys.

Only when we have clear objectives and are sure that we want to achieve them will we be convinced that no one will make the decision for us: we can be wrong and that is good, but we will be pleased to own our mistakes. In a way, the beautiful has to do with the absence of a script pointing in the right direction.

? When you have to make a decision and you don’t make it

it’s also a decision in itself. ?

-William James-
