If we allow ourselves to find our hearts, sooner or later we will receive it in abundance. This is exactly what we find in “A Joy Story: Joy and Heron”, a beautiful animated short film that tells the story of a puppy going fishing with its owner and finds an elegant and irritating heron. What happens between them is a true example of kindness, affection and understanding.
We know that there are many productions of this type, from time to time Pixar surprises us with some of these little stories that, as a gift and exercise of reflection, always touch the heart directly to seduce us, is no different.
- Coming directly from China just a few months ago and directed by Kyra Buschor.
- Constantin Paeplow and Kenneth Kuan.
- This short film seeks to open our eyes to solidarity.
At the same time, passion pictures creatives also wanted to pay their small tribute to this year 2018, which in Chinese culture is the year of the dog. The protagonist of this story of just over 4 minutes is, therefore, a small white dog, huge nose and full of illusion, but also of fears.
This concerned and suspicious attitude will be destroyed by the presence of Heron, a friendly heron that, in Eastern culture, symbolizes goodness.
“The best life is not the longest, but the richest in good deeds” – Marie Curie-
In the short film that we will see below there is no voice, the magic of looks, the power of faces full of expressiveness, curiosity, worry, surprise and kindness say it all.
So, interestingly, the only human figure in this story always stands on his back, unaware at all times of what happens in his boat, to which we are invited.
The plot begins with little Joy and her owner starting a quiet fishing afternoon. The setting is ideal, the weather is perfect with a calm so serene that nothing seems to spoil the beautiful afternoon that will be between a man and his puppy.
Joy has a happy heart, her eyes shine and her wet nose is aware of everything. He knows very well that he must be very careful not to disturb the fishing of his owner.
Suddenly, something happens. We see a strange and somewhat bizarre creature come on the scene, it’s Heron, a nice heron that ers in the corner of the boat with a clear goal: take the bait, steal the delicious worms.
Little Joy does not hesitate to avoid this attempt, as a good dog and faithful ally of its owner. So, he advances on the heron to thwart his target, but fails. Garza collects worms.
The scene is repeated several times. The heron, always skilled, intelligent and firm in its objective, does not hesitate to hunt the worms, leaving the fisherman and his dog almost without bait.
At the same time, in each of these funny and thwarted attacks, little Joy always ends up losing and being scolded by his owner, who never realizes what’s going on, all he notices is the boat’s movement.
Our protagonist is a dog that merely does what has been taught him: protect what belongs to you, defend his owner, however, the result of the story will teach us something very important.
It is not good to think of ideas or motivations as true without thinking about it beforehand, it is not appropriate to fall into quick thoughts, only appearances, etc.
It is true that this strange bird was a little strange, that its image did not inspire confidence. Besides, your actions didn’t seem right, but why did he steal your hook?
We all do missions without thinking, we all get carried away by our first impulses, as little joy in this story.
However, if we look around, we will discover that there are more worlds outside our own ship, so we will realize that behind certain appearances and behaviors, there are magical beings with their own needs, creatures that live far beyond these mental limits that we outline with our distortions, stereotypes and labels.
Heron, the heron, didn’t fly for pleasure or to eat worms, Little Joy understands it right away and doesn’t hesitate to open her heart, offering all the worms on the boat to Heron. What happens after this wonderful (and loving)? The act demonstrates the powerful effects that the gift of the heart can have.
Let’s learn from this special court. Let’s learn from this dog and heron and not be like this fisherman who notices nothing, who leaves behind the most special, magical and important things in life We hope you enjoy it!
